What Causes Paint To Flake Off?

If you applied exterior paint to your home, you may wonder how it’s flaking off in the first place. Isn’t it supposed to withstand the weather and remain durable outside?

While many home paints are labeled this way, there are some factors that can reduce their effectiveness and lead to eventual flaking.

Moisture is the enemy of all exterior paint. The accumulation of moisture can lead to paint that is bubbling, flaking and even promoting mold growth.

Prolonged periods with compromised exterior paint can lead to damage to the siding of your home as well. While moisture is usually a number one suspect, there’s an even bigger culprit when it comes to flaking.

Poor Surface Preparation

Your house paint may have gone on smoothly and steadily, but appearances can be deceiving. Preparing the painting surface properly is one of the most important stages of any painting project. When painting an entire house, it’s easy to see how a distracted painter may miss spots or not do as great of a job completely cleaning and drying the surface.

If the house siding is damp or dirty, the new coating of paint will not adhere to it properly. Any amount of water on the outside of the home acts as a barrier to the paint, preventing it from laying against the actual siding material. If the siding is not cleaned properly, specks of dirt, dust and other contaminants will do the same thing, preventing the paint from sticking smoothly to the wall.

Paint flaking is a major indicator that the paint was not applied to a smooth, clean and dry surface.

Rhino Shield Texas’ Application Process

In addition to applying our iconic ceramic coating instead of traditional paint, Rhino Shield’s application process is detailed and comprehensive. Our team members complete six important steps to ensure flaking paint is never an issue.

  1. Pressure washing — We pressure wash all the surfaces to remove any dirt and debris from the substrate before we begin working. This provides a clean surface for optimal Rhino Shield adhesion.
  2. Repairing/replacing siding — We repair or replace all damaged siding materials with the exact type of material used on your home. This may include wood replacement or stucco repair. Our goal is to bring the surface back to its original condition.
  3. Scraping — All loose paint and debris on wood surfaces are removed by scraping. Our goal is to provide a bondable surface for the primer and top coat.
  4. Caulking — Using a high-quality elastomeric acrylic caulk, we caulk all small surface cracks and holes, vertical joints and areas around doors and windows to properly reduce air infiltration and ensure longevity and flexibility. However, it’s not in our practice to caulk underneath laps as it may limit ventilation.
  5. Masking — All areas that are not to be coated are masked off, covered or temporarily removed (such as lighting fixtures, mailboxes, downspouts, utility boxes, etc.). Special attention is given to covering areas such as roofing, landscaping, lawns and other areas prone to overspray.
  6. Priming — The primer is applied to seal, waterproof and provide a bonding agent for the ceramic finish coat. Our primer contains a proprietary formula that includes an additive that reduces the growth of mold, mildew and algae. When applied, the primer sealer is white but dries to a clear finish.

This process ensures that every inch of your home’s exterior is clean and dry before we even begin to apply our ceramic coating!

I was pleased with the RhinoShield coating on my house, so when I had my deck rebuilt, I wanted RhinoShield on the deck posts. They were very responsive to the deck schedule and did a great job! I also like that they support Texas Public Radio with a business membership.

Excellent service! The workers were polite and professional, addressed all of my concerns, arrived on time and provided high-quality results. In the recent hail storm, I received no damage. The paint is remarkable. I wish I would have found this 10 years ago. I will definitely use them again.
